good monday morning. we begin with the latest details on the release of american p.o.w. bowe bergdahl. >> he is now recovering at a u.s. military hospital in germany. his parents are waiting for the doctor's okay before they have a telephone conversation with their son. >> but there are questions about the prisoner swap. which led to bergdahl's freedom. our coverage begins with abc's tahman bradley.,. which led to bergdahl's freedom. our coverage begins with abc's tahman bradle which led to bergdahl's freedom. our coverage begins with abc's tahman bradley. good morning, tahman. tahman. >> reporter: john and linzie, good morning. sergeant bergdahl was the only american prisoner in the war on afghanistan. the obama administration badly wanted his release, so they cut a deal with the taliban. some people don't think that was wise. >> we praise god for your freedom. >> reporter: while the release of sergeant bowe bergdahl is being celebrated by his family and the obama administration, not everyone is happy about what it cost to secure his freedom. to get sergeant bergdahl back after five years as a taliban prisoner, president obama released five high-risk taliban fighters from guantanamo bay. senior republicans say the deal breaks a long-standing u.s. policy of not negotiating with terrorists.

>> the number one way that al qaeda raises money is by ransom, kidnapping and ransom. we have now set a price. >> i think the big issue here is what's going to happen to these five individuals? if they re-enter the fight, then it is going to put american lives at risk. >> reporter: details of sergeant bergdahl's original capture back in 2009 have not been released, but a knowledgeable source tells abc news he walked away from his post without his weapon. the white house says it had an obligation to negotiate for bergdahl's release and that it needed to act now due to concerns about the soldier's health. >> we needed to get him out of there essentially to save his life. >> reporter: sergeant bergdahl is said to be in good condition recovering at a u.s. military hospital in germany. word of his release spread quickly across his hometown in idaho. >> we were honking horns and just screaming. >> bowe is coming home. you know, that's what you hear all the time. just walk around, hear it everywhere. >> reporter: there are questions whether this prisoner exchange was legal.

the entire afghan muslim nation for this big victory." the question now is, will these men go back to the battlefield? muhammad lila, abc news, islamabad, pakistan. >> and stay with abc news as this story is still unfolding. we'll have team coverage coming up on "good morning america." well, a nationwide manhunt is under way for a san francisco man who may be carrying explosives. the fbi is asking for the public's help to find ryan kelly chamberlain. they say agents found explosive materials in his apartment. so far they're not aware of any threats to public safety, but he is considered armed and dangerous. a political consultant who once worked with chamberlain was shocked. >> i would talk to him when he was -- when we ran into each other, which was very, you know, very frequent. he was always extremely pleasant, very polite. >> chamberlain was politically active in the past. he helped with the mayoral campaign and even ran for an assembly seat back in 2002. he was last seen in san francisco on saturday. and investigators are a long

way from knowing exactly what caused a plane crash in massachusetts, which killed a media mogul. what's left of the plane lies at the bottom of an embankment. the ntsb tweeted this picture last night showing investigators on the scene. the plane went off the end of the runway saturday night failing to get off the ground. witnesses said they heard revving engines and then an explosion. >> i went out to look what was going on. big, black smoke across -- from behind the neighbor's house, and then we saw the flames. real big flames. >> you could smell like something burning. from the street, you could actually smell it. >> well, among the seven people killed in the crash was lewis katz, the co-owner of "the philadelphia inquirer." former pennsylvania governor ed rendell was also supposed to be on that plane, but he canceled because of a prior commitment. and federal officials are investigating an air show crash in washington or wisconsin that killed a stunt pilot. police say the 47-year-old was performing tricks at the stevens

point air show when his plane went down in a wooded area. he was pronounced dead at the scene. edward snowden says he has applied for asylum in brazil. snowden's temporary asylum in russia expires in august, and he no longer has a u.s. passport, so his options are limited. brazil's foreign minister says no such request has been received. a small earthquake rattled the los angeles area last night but it didn't appear to cause any damage or injuries. the shallow 4.2 magnitude quake was centered in the santa monica mountains just a few miles from westwood. it was felt from malibu to beverly hills and beyond. so far at least one small aftershock has followed. new this morning, the woman at the center of the donald sterling scandal is again making headlines. sterling's friend, v. stiviano, was allegedly assaulted by two men outside of a hotel in new york city. her lawyer has confirmed to abc news that she was examined by a doctor and found to be, quote, banged up but okay. the nypd says she has not filed a police report. president obama's administration is set to make

what could be one of the boldest moves of his presidency on climate change. the epa expected to release new regulations today curbing earth-warming emissions from the nation's power plants by 30%. that would happen by 2030. both opponents -- but opponents, excuse me, say that those new regulations would drive up energy costs and force many of those plants to close costing 224,000 jobs a year. fans are remembering ann b. davis, the actress who played the lovable housekeeper alice on "the brady bunch." she died on sunday. the show debuted in 1969 and aired for five years with davis as the mainstay in the blended sitcom family. davis appeared in various brady spin-offs and sequels over the years. she died in san antonio, texas, after a fall. she was 88 years old. love that character. >> always loved alice. who didn't love alice? right? all right. time now for the weather from across the nation. you will need an umbrella and a rain coat if you're from the great lakes to the gulf coast where it will be heavy at times.

aficionados have been waiting for all year. the company's annual worldwide developers conference in san francisco. you can expect to see an upgraded software for all the devices, but streaming music is expected to take center stage. the company is fresh off its $3 billion deal to buy high-end headphonemaker beats electronics. up to 200,000 players who are on college football and basketball rosters may be eligible for money from a settlement with video gamemaker electronic arts. the proposed $40 million deal would settle a lawsuit over the illegal use of the players' likenesses in ncaa branded games. the settlement must still be approved by a federal judge. and skechers has inked a sponsorship deal with the owners of triple crown hopeful, california chrome. it calls for the shoe brand's logo to appear on everything from the horse's blankets to apparel worn by his handlers ahead of saturday's belmont stakes. terms of the deal were not disclosed. "maleficent" cast a huge spell at the weekend box office.

just outside minneapolis crews are scrambling to stabilize a neighborhood where a giant crater opened up between two homes. heavy rain that began on saturday caused a storm sewer to fail creating that massive sinkhole. unfortunately, more rain is headed that way today. and, in fact, rain and possible flooding will make this morning's commute in that area very treacherous. those slick roadways will stretch south way to the gulf coast. if you're flying today, the only two airports where delays are possible, chicago and miami. now to championship golfer phil mickelson at the center of an insider trading investigation. the fbi and s.e.c. are looking into specific trades in clorox stock made in 2011 by mickelson, vegas gambler billy walters and billionaire investor carl icahn. >> icahn was looking to take over clorox at the time, and federal investigators want to know if he tipped off walters who then tipped off mickelson. mickelson says he's innocent. >> i have done absolutely

nothing wrong, and that's why i've been fully cooperating with the fbi agents, and i'm happy to do so in the future too until this gets resolved. >> icahn also said he's cooperating. billy walters had no comment. well, in washington, the search for those six climbers likely killed in an avalanche on mt. rainier is being scaled back. park rangers now say conditions on the mountain are far too dangerous to send ground crews in because of falling ice and rocks, and they say even helicopter searches at this time could be risky. >> unfortunately, this mountain is dynamic, and things change. there's snow bridges that can collapse. there's cornices that can give way. there's avalanches, and nobody is immune to that no matter how skilled you are. >> helicopter crews did find climbing and camping gear in the snow more than 3,000 feet below the climbers' last known position. their last communication came by satellite phone on wednesday evening. all right. well, now to the latest in the

family drama surrounding radio legend casey kasem. a spokesman says kasem has been moved by his daughter to a medical facility in washington state. his condition is not known, but kasem's daughter said in court on friday that her father is suffering from bed sores and lung and bladder infections. kasem's daughters have been at odds with their stepmother over his care. and there's been another one of those scary accidents involving a bounce house. two 10-year-olds were in the house in littleton, colorado, when a gust of wind up to 30 miles an hour sent it tumbling 300 feet across a field. three weeks ago, a bounce house in upstate new york was carried 50 feet into the air -- look at that picture -- during a windstorm seriously injuring two children. well, a 14-year-old in utah in some big trouble following a wild chase in a stolen car. >> hey, you guys, watch out. they'll come. get out of the way! get out of -- >> wow. that kid drove straight through that park coming close to a group of children. he led police through a residential area, as well.

it all ended when a man in a pickup truck purposesly crashed his truck into the guy, and a gun, by the way, was also found inside the car. >> all right, some crazy stuff from around major league baseball to show you. we start with your favorite team, john, the mets down in philadelphia. >> let's do it. marlin byrd of the phillies swings and breaks his bat. watch again. he didn't hit the ball. the bat broke as he swung and missed. that, i have never seen before. wow. check that out. and this from dodger stadium. a swarm of bees, linzie. >> yow! they took over an area right next to the dodgers' dugout before last night's game against the pirates. eventually beekeepers helped get the swarm out of there. that looks quite scary, and the pirates stung the dodgers winning 5-3. >> nice. did you see that microphone right there? that must have been some sound they were getting. as for hockey's playoffs, we now know what teams will face off for the stanley cup.

♪ all right. time now to check "the pulse." stories you'll be talking about today. we start with an apology from justin bieber. >> that's right. it has to do with a racist joke he told when he was just 15 years old caught on video. it's been posted by the british tabloid "the sun." bieber has released a statement saying, quote -- >> he says "as a young man, i didn't understand the power of certain words and how they can hurt. now that these mistakes from the past have become public, i need to apologize again to all those that i offended." and a tennessee woman is under fire for walking down the aisle with something new. >> yeah, check this out. that's because it was her newborn baby attached to her wedding gown. you can see shona carter-brooks' 1-month-old daughter embedded in all those ruffles of the train of her dress which she dragged all the way to the altar. >> i don't know what to say. i guess the baby couldn't walk down the aisle.

hospitals. all three rims are in stable condition and so far no arrests. >> more preparing news, a nationwide manhunt for a san francisco man who police are calling "armed and dangerous." the f.b.i. says look out for 42-year-old ryan kelly chamberlain ii, after authorities found explosive materials in his apartment during a day long raid on saturday. he is well-known in san francisco's political scene having worked as a field agoer for a marriage candidate in 2003. people who know ryan are shocked. >> i was completely shocked and just out of character pore anything that i know about ryan the. >> he has brown hair and blue eyes and 6' 3" and last seen wearing a dark blue sweatshirt and jeans. matt keller will have more coming up in 3 minutes. extra police are on hand at
